What to Look for When Selecting Technology to Ensure Compliance and Prevent Diversion in Long-Term Care

During this session participants will learn best practices for implementing and utilizing technology solutions while maintaining patient safety and regulatory adherence. Objectives of the presentation are: Identifying communication problems that exist between facilities, pharmacies and providers in LTC; Identifying and listing key considerations when selecting new technologies for communication; Learning how to use better communication to accomplish more with fewer staff, including moving a facility’s narc book from paper into the cloud.

Why Should I Apply? Using the Quality Award Process as a Management Tool
1.5 Administrative Hours
- This session will identify ways to effectively use the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award criteria as an organizational management tool that enables applicants to focus on identifying organizational gaps and developing processes for systematic approaches to evaluating and improving the processes. The session will explore approaches for using the award criteria to expand and grow the QAPI Plan and Facility Assessment components required by CMS Rules of Participation. Some of the current operational gaps facing long-term care leaders and facilities that will be discussed include:
- Accommodating and addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion of the workplace (age, gender, etc.)
- Ensuring fair treatment for different resident groups (religion, diverse social values, same sex relationships, etc.)
- Security and cybersecurity of information and knowledge management in the EMR world
Strategic planning to develop a plan that fully addresses strategic objectives, goals, challenges, threats and opportunities.

Cybersecurity Awareness

We will cover common cyber threats, discuss best practices for secure computing and review recent breaches and guidance from federal agencies. This is a practical non-technical session designed for all attendees, regardless of technical expertise. Topics include social engineering, phishing and keeping mobile devices secure. Facility Assessment Approach to Behavioral Health and Mental Health Basics

This session will delve into recent regulatory updates from the 2022 CMS revised State Operations Manual, focusing on new and revised F-tags related to assessing and meeting residents’ behavioral health, substance use, and trauma needs. Also highlighted will be tools and resources aimed at supporting CMS certified nursing facilities in addressing the growing behavioral health needs of their population. This session will provide educational background into severe mental illness (SMI) including Schizophrenia Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma disorders, and dissociative disorders. Participants will gain an understanding of the impact of SMI on health and well-being, exploring effective therapeutic approaches and best practices for integrating mental health support into care routines.

Earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone – When the Mississippi River Ran Backward!

The New Madrid Seismic Zone is the largest active seismic zone in the US East of the Rocky Mountains and guess what? It’s in our backyard (and for some of you, in your front yard!) Join us for an informative presentation on the history and impacts of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. With more than 200 quakes per year, being prepared for potential impact isn’t a consideration, it’s a requirement. Over 45 SNF, ALF, and RCFs reside in the immediate impact zone and over 300 in the outer rims of the ripple areas. Long-term care facilities need to know what to do, how to do it, and know who to contact when/if it ever comes becomes an issue. This session will give you both the bigger picture of earthquake preparedness in Missouri and the smaller snapshot of being able to effectively shelter in place, triage, and service your community. Addressing Relocation Stress in Dementia Care

A diagnosis of dementia heightens the individual’s emotions and increases the risks of untoward events, such as falls, altercations and elopements.
